Do you have good answers to any of these questions?
Here are mine....
Why sponsor a child?
Jesus talks about loving our neighbor, about caring for the least of these and about making disciples of all nations. I think sponsorship fulfills all of these and more. It's also a great way for us to grow our world view and identify with a different lifestyle.
Why Compassion?
Compassion is committed to integrity and continually scores the highest ranking with Charity Navigator. They are committed to Jesus and won't put spreading the gospel on the back seat. After 20 years of sponsorship through Compassion, I can say that Compassion is doing what they say they are doing. Sure...I've had my disappointments when it comes to kids moving away or being pulled from the program by their families, but when you are dealing with other flawed human beings, it's not all going to be rosy. Life happens, people make decisions we might not agree with, but Compassion does their best to maintain high standards of integrity.
Why speak up?
Because Proverbs 31:8
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.
Why does any of this matter?
God hates poverty. We are his church - his hands and feet - and with his Spirit, we are to do his work here to further the kingdom of God. It matters to God and therefore, it matters to us. This is not something that some of us are called to - it's something every single one of us who claim to love Christ need to do. Not sponsorship, necessarily, but taking care of the poor and the oppressed. If you don't believe me, then read your Bible a bit and you'll see this concern for the poor was very central to Christ's mission.
