Food

This is an actual Peruvian "pantry"

Have you ever opened your refrigerator or cupboards, looked inside and said, "There's nothing to eat!" The reality for most of us is that this is simply not true. It would be far more accurate to say, "There's nothing in here that I want to eat."

For so many people, there is nothing to eat. Literally.

For so many people, there is no choice.

I won't bore you with statistics, but the reality is that many parents in our world do not have enough food to feed their children. As a mother, this breaks my heart.

Today, have your kids count the cans, bottles and boxes of food in your cupboards and consider giving a $.01, $.05, $.10 or $.25 donation for each to Compassion.

As a family talk about our easy access to food. Talk about how and what other families eat around the world. These two books are very interesting and have great photographs.

(Compassion Countries: Ecuador, Guatemala, India, Philippines, Mexico)

And like this boy in Peru, let's truly be thankful for the food God has provided to us. This photo was taken at a Compassion project in Lima at lunchtime.

  1. I remember watching a show on what the world eats'... I found something similar at time.com, I noticed some of the same pictures as in the book. I wonder if it is the same thing? It is so interesting to look at the different families from different countries and see what they do eat! My kids will enjoy looking at this! Thanks!

I actually did the 'there is nothing to eat' thing this morning, I feel so blessed to be able to go grocery shopping when my cupboards 'feel bare'.

  2. Oh my ... thank you for putting this into perspective. Just today I was looking through our cupboards and thinking 'what am I going to make for lunch; we have nothing to eat in this house ...", but I was so, so wrong.

I will now be counting the number of items in our cupboards and making a donation *per item* to Compassion.
