Maps

One thing I have really enjoyed sending to my sponsored and correspondence kids is a map of my country. And the kids love that I have done this. I especially like this printable one from Coloring Castle. They also have flags you could print out.

A couple years ago when we moved from Michigan to Oregon, I sent a map showing where we were moving from and to.

I also send this to new kids - and show them where we live and where our families live. I tell them that I was originally from IL and my family still lives there and that my husband grew up in NY and his family still lives there.

Usually I color in the states I am talking about so they can see what I am talking about.

I have even colored in all the states we have lived in over the past 16 years.

And there are lots of other ways you can use a map in your letter writing. Recently I sent Benson a map of Europe and colored in the country of France so he could see where his sponsor lives.

Have you sent maps to your kids?

I have done something similar to this for my kids, and recently I sent a world map (poster size) to my oldest girl who loves geography. I was unsure if it would make it to her, as folded it was pretty thick, but I heard back from her that she got it. Each month with her letters I send information about a new place (I started with the countries her Compassion brothers and sister live in, now I am moving on to places I have been). Anyways, she was amazed when she saw the map at how many countries there are that she never knew existed. I love geography, so having a child (actually, she is 20, so I guess she is an adult :) with the same love is really bringing out the geography nerd in me :)

That is so cool that you both share a love of geography - what a gift for both of you! This gives me the idea to send a map of Africa to those of my kids who live in Africa - I wonder if they even realize how big their continent is and how many countries there are.

You definitely should! It also might be interesting too to see the differences and similarities between the countries within Africa, like foods and holidays, traditions, etc. I'm getting excited just thinking about it :) If anyone is ever stuck about what to write to their kids, geography offers endless possibilities!
Would you consider writing a guest post for me about this very thing? About what you have done?
