Write to Your Children

It's a new month, and it's time to write to our sponsored children again. Grab your calendar and schedule an appointment to write.

Ask you children or spouse for an idea or theme for this month. We chose butterflies and sent these fun "decorate your own" I found at Oriental Trading.

If you don't know what to say from month to month, here are some ideas:
  • write up a short devotional to share (Michelle has written some excellent ones on the power of words, sharing, obeying your parents and forgiveness)
  • share a Bible verse you are studying or memorizing and talk about what it means to you
  • transform (and write out) Bible verses as prayers, inserting your child's name where appropriate.
  • just tell your child how much you love them and are praying for them!
It doesn't have to be fancy or profound. Simply saying "we love you" is enough.

I'd love to know in the comments when you plan to write to your child this month.

  1. I sponsor a 10 yr old girl in Nicaragua.I have sponsored her since December 2010 and she still has not written me I have written her every month. Do you have any advice you could give me?

  2. The easiest and quickest thing to do is call Compassion. They will be able to look in their system and see if a letter has been written or sent yet. They can also send a field memo requesting that your girl write to you soon.

I sponsor a girl in Nicaragua and have found that she just doesn't write as often as others. Each country operates differently - some write reciprocally, some write the minimum of 3 times a year and some are in between.

Keep writing - your letters to her are far more important than her letters to you.

  4. I sponsor a child in Haiti. The Haiti election results just came in so I am sending him a short letter about that, with a picture of the president elect. Since he probably does not get a newspaper I figure he may not have a picture of the president elect. I am sure his family knows about the election results but maybe they will be happy that I am paying attention to Haiti news (and even that we get news of Haiti in the US).

  5. Jill, I just love your blog! Love it!

My plan was to write about the Maple Sugaring going on in our area. I had meant to get to a sugar shack to take pictures, but I haven't gotten to it and winder if I will have to write about it without photos or use some that someone else has taken. I plan to share how the sap is turned to syrup and how we put them on pancakes, which is a fairly common food for many of our kids, in one form or another.
Then I will share Psalm 119:103: How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth.

  6. I have to laugh and come back and tell you... I printed out stationary for the next batch of letters and I'm using the SAME paper you are! I love the Dollar Store!

  7. Michelle...A friend of mine just sent me seasonal borders she printed out. I'll feature them next month maybe. They are great because my kids and I can color them, or the sponsored kids can color them when they get them.

So glad you are enjoying this blog.

  8. I usually pick something from the letter and make that a theme of sorts... For example, when I mentioned how much snow we still had, I included a photo of my daughter beside a 6 foot drift, and printed the letters on snowman paper. The rest of the letter was conversational and included all kinds of topics.

  9. Michelle, I could see if I can get some maple sugar production pics for you this Saturday, I'll keep you posted. Even if I don't get them in time for this letter, you could always send them in the next one.

  10. I shall be writing to my sponsored children soon, within the week. I sponsor a little girl in Bolivia and she is pretty good about writing back, usually about 6 times a year. I also sponsor a teenage boy in Ecuador. I have yet to hear from him and have been writing to him since Oct 2010 however Compassion has said a letter is in their system so hopefully soon I will hear from him. In the meantime I will write to them both soon.
