Book Giveaway - Hope Lives

Today's featured book is Hope Lives; A Journey of Restoration by Amber Van Schooneveld. This book is laid out as a 5 week study on poverty.

The back of the book has this description:

This five-week journey of introspection and prayer will help you
  • discover what keeps you from engaging in global issues
  • explore what Scripture really says about the poor
  • understand the true nature of poverty
  • draw close to the poor through prayer
  • respond to God's voice as he speaks to you about poverty
25 daily readings and journaling opportunities help you discover your unique role in the body of Christ and a way to respond to the needs of the poor.

The book is full of Scripture, stories, questions and more. Although a heavy subject, the book is easy to read because it's divided into daily readings. It's a book I will read more than once, and I'm sure I'll glean new insight with each reading.

  1. This comment isn't to enter the contest, because I already own this book, but I wanted to say for those who don't, that you will definitely want to win this book. It is an easy to read & work through devotion that will really teach you so much, even if your heart already is geared toward helping those in poverty.

  2. We came to know about Compassion when someone came to speak at our church years ago. We couldn't afford to sponsor a child back then, but it was my goal to get to a point where we finally could. 2 years ago we took on our first Compassion child, and now between full sponsorships and correspondence sponsorships, we have 10 beautiful children in our Compassion family!!! :)

  4. Jennifer - thanks for the extra plug! It's exactly how I feel about the book.

Judy - what a great story - another amazing testimony to God's goodness and provision! From 0 to 10 in two years.

  5. I don't really remember where I heard about Compassion, but when I did I knew it was something I wanted to do!! I have a love for helping kids! For years it wasn't possible, but then God made a way! Sadly, I wasn't a very involved sponsor until about a year ago.....I only wrote when Brenda wrote to me, but now I write at least once a month!

  6. So, I wasn't going to enter any more since I already won one, I didn't want to be selfish...but I really want this book :) If I don't win I will be adding it to my list!

I learned about the specific ministry of Compassion at my college (I went to a private school, Compassion had a booth set up one chapel morning). It was my senior year, and as soon as I graduated and got a job I started sponsoring Lorkems. That was seven wonderful years ago, and Lorkems and I are still going strong :)

  7. Rebecca....

I learned about Compassion in college, too. I heard Bart Compolo (Tony's son) speak at our chapel and he talked about Compassion.

  8. I meant to comment yesterday and then forgot! I have "known" about Compassion for a long time but it wasn't until I heard Jill talking about it that I had a real desire to get involved. A post on her blog encouraging folks to sponsor a child as a Christmas present to the Lord was our starting point with Compassion, we sponsored our first child 2 1/2 years ago on Christmas morning.
